My AMG GT R is Damaged - Can PPF Save It?
Things could have gone badly wrong for my Mercedes-AMG GT R when I spotted a scratch to a carbon fibre front fender. Fortunately the car has a complete Topaz Skin PPF, so did that save the day?
My GT R has done over 12,000 miles and is very much seeing daily driver duties. A risk that one takes from that level of usage including through snow and grime, taking part in supercar events, and travelling everywhere, is the chance of it picking up some knocks and bumps. In this case, following the Mille Miglia we spotted this mark to the front wing panel that looks like an impact from a bike or bicycle, not hugely surprising given all the tight towns, packed traffic and areas the car has been parked during the event.
Immediately it was apparent that the scratch had pierced and torn the PPF on the panel, but I had no way to know if the paint underneath would be fine or need some work to rectify it. It's also worth noting that carbon fibre panels don't really have flexibility, they are very strong and light but if pushed beyond their point of no return, will just crack and splinter.
Fortunately, the Topaz Skin did its job and my car was fine! Equally, we took a look at the stone chips picked up on the bonnet, which also showed more proof in the pudding. I've always been a big PPF advocate and that only strengthens now seeing the results in this situation.
