The Audi A7 Sportback (internally designated Typ 4G) is an executive car produced by Audi. It is a five-door fastback which is frequently described as a "four door coupé" with its sleek profile and frameless doors. The A7 is based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, which is shared with the fourth-generation (C7) 2012 Audi A6; with the coupé-like A7 being released before the conventional A6 saloon/wagon.
The A7 marked Audi's return to the executive hatchback market since the 1970 three-door Audi 100 Coupe of 1970 and the 1977 five-door 100 Avant. It was announced at the Pinakothek der Moderne art museum in Munich on 27 July 2010 and débuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The car was launched in the US at the New York Auto Show in April 2011 as a 2012 model.[3]
The A7 was preceded by a concept car, the Audi Sportback concept shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.[4] The concept car first spawned the Audi A5 Sportback which was released September 2009 as a 2010 model.
Reviewers have cited the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class as a competitor to the Audi A7 in the four-door executive coupé market.[7] The A7 has also been compared to the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo since both are mid-luxury hatchbacks, though the 5 Series GT is based on the full-size BMW 7 Series while the A7 is unrelated to the flagship Audi A8.[8]
The A7 features all the driver assistance systems from the 2011 Audi A8, but adds a head-up display and Active Lane Assist.
At the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, Audi presented the Audi S7. This high performance version of the A7 features a 4.0 biturbo TFSI V8 engine making 420 PS (309 kW; 414 bhp) and is offered only with the quattro four wheel drive system. Because of the 7 speed S Tronic gearbox, the maximum torque has been limited to 550 N·m (410 ft·lbf). The Audi S7 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds, according to Road & Track magazine.
The Audi S6 has the same powertrain as the S7, but in a saloon or wagon body style. The 2012 Audi S8 (D4) has a related 4.0 biturbo TFSI V8 engine but in a higher state of tune with 520 hp (388 kW) and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Awards
In the ICOTY Awards, the Audi A7 was named as the International Car of the Year 2012.[11]
AutoWeek magazine named the Audi A7 as the Best of the Best/Car for 2012.[12]
Esquire magazine named the Audi A7 as the 2011 Esquire Car of the Year.
