The new 2013 Volkswagen Golf will be slightly larger than the MK6 while managing to be approximately 100kg lighter. The GTI will offer a 217bhp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an available performance pack to raise the output to 227bhp. [17]

The seventh-generation Golf had its début in late 2012 at the Paris Motor Show.[18]

The Golf VII, Typ 5G[19] will use the new MQB platform, shared with the new Audi A3, new SEAT León and upcoming Škoda Octavia. The Volkswagen Golf is a small family car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured by German automaker Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across seven generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates -- as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
Compared to the previous generation, the Golf Mk7 has a roomier cabin, with greater shoulder room for the front and rear passengers, rear legroom and boot space. It features a number of new safety systems, including a multi-collision braking system to automatically brake the car after an accident in order to avoid a second collision, adaptive cruise control including an emergency braking function, a lane-keeping assistant, driver fatigue detection, traffic sign recognition and an automatic parking system.

Engine options at launch include 1.2 and 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engines, with 85 PS (63 kW; 84 hp) and 140 PS (103 kW; 138 hp) respectively, and 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines, with 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) and 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) respectively.[2] The 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Concept has a theoretical combined fuel consumption of 3.2 l/100 km (88 mpg-imp; 74 mpg-US) and anticipated 85 g/km CO2 emissions.[3]

Variants to be introduced later include a three-door hatchback, a five-door Golf Plus hatchback, a five-door estate, a five-door Golf CC liftback, a two-door cabriolet, and high-performance Golf GTI and Golf R models.

The original Golf Mk1, designed by the Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro, was a front-wheel drive, front-engined replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and the world's second best-selling model, with more than 29 million built by 2012.[1]

Most production of the Golf was initially in the 3-door hatchback style.[2] Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate/wagon (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979--2002), and a Golf-derived notchback saloon/sedan, variously called Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Vento or Volkswagen Bora (from 1999). The cars have filled many market segments, from basic personal cars, to high-performance hot hatches.

The Volkswagen Golf has won many awards throughout its history. Every generation of Golf has been a runner-up in the European Car of the Year awards, but only one has been a winner, the Golf Mk3 in 1992.[3] The Volkswagen Golf has been in the Car and Driver 10Best multiple times.
The Golf name is derived from the German word for Gulf Stream[4] and the period in its history when VW named vehicles after prominent winds, including also the Passat (after the German word for Trade wind), Jetta (after the Jet stream), Bora (after Bora) and Scirocco (after Sirocco).[5] "Golf" is also a sport, a theme that is shared with the Polo and Derby. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf
