The Porsche 911 (pronounced as Nine Eleven, German: Neunelfer) is a luxury 2-door sports coupe made by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. It has a distinctive design, rear engined and with independent rear suspension, an evolution of the swing axle on the Porsche 356. The engine was also air-cooled until the introduction of the Type 996 in 1998. Since its introduction on September 11, 1963,[1] it has undergone continuous development, though the basic concept has remained little changed.[2]
Throughout its lifetime, the 911 has been modified by private teams and by the factory itself for racing, rallying and other forms of automotive competition. It is among the most successful competition cars ever. In the mid 1970s, normally aspirated 911 Carrera RSRs won major world championship sports car races such as Targa Florio, Daytona, Sebring and Nürburgring, even against prototypes. The 911-derived 935 turbo also won the coveted 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979.
The Porsche 991 is the internal designation for the sixth generation Porsche 911 which will be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September as the replacement for the 997. An initial release of photos and information was revealed by Porsche on 23 August 2011.[1]
The current direct injection 3.8-litre flat six engine from the Carrera S remains, with power increasing to 394 hp (294 kW). The Carrera engine will be a 3.4-litre, producing 345 hp (257 kW). The car features stop/start technology and also electro-mechanical power steering.
Compared to the outgoing 997, the 991 wheelbase has increased by 100 mm (3.9 in), with the overall length up by 70 mm (2.8 in).[2][3] Due to the use of high-strength steels, aluminium and some composites the weight has been reduced by 45 kg (99.2 lb).[4]
Images of the 991 were widely published on the internet on 18 August 2011, prior to the car's official debut.[5] The photos revealed Porsche had taken an evolutionary design step, in keeping with the previous generation 997 and 996.
