New Steering Wheel UPGRADE for My SLS Black Series!
This is an upgrade I always intended to do for my SLS AMG Black Series, a new steering wheel from Carbontastic! Replacing the original dated wheel comes the latest style with a bespoke spec to match my car as the last pre-planned modification to the Shmeemobile.
My SLS BS has seen a host of changes, from the paintwork going Mystic Blue at Chartwell, and the wheels being made silver by KerbSafe, to the RENNtech R1 package upgrades too, but a change to a more modern AMG steering wheel was always on the cards. In fact, I planned to do this with Carbontastic right back earlier this year before everything had to be put on pause considering what was going on.
The steering wheel from Carbontastic is based on the same style as that from the AMG GT R facelift, and carries a spec to perfectly match the rest of the interior. It's finished with black Alcantara, a red leather 12'o'clock stripe at the top, the spokes are gloss carbon fibre with gloss black control panels and a red Shmee150 logo at the bottom, and it also features extended carbon shift paddles on the back too.
You might be wondering about the controls and electronics, and this is exactly where we have run into a stumbling block. In theory everything is backwards compatible and it should be possible to use all functionality that the car had prior. However, given the nature of creating a product to backdate like this, the first try with the ecu for the wheel does not allow the paddles to function, only the menu controls like media and trip information. Carbontastic are now working on a replacement unit and hopefully that can go in before long.
To carry out the work, I have returned with the car to my trusty friends at RENNtech Europe, with whom it's always in great hands. I had actually intended very soon to drive the car back to the UK, but given there are a few other things to be done to it, that will be pushed back for now. Simultaneously it also now finally has the missing door seal installed, a part that proved excruciatingly difficult to get a hold of!
