The Opel Mokka is a mini SUV/subcompact crossover [3] from the German automaker Opel, which was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It is intended to go on sale at the end of 2012.[4] It is to be sold as the Vauxhall Mokka in the UK,[5] and as the Buick Encore in North America and China.
The Buick Encore version of the Mokka was unveiled in Detroit's 2012 North American International Auto Show.[10] It will slot below the Enclave in the Buick lineup. AMC/Renault used the Encore name on its 1983-87 subcompact car. The Buick Encore will also go on sale in China.[11] The Buick Encore will initially be available with the 1.4 petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic.
The Mokka is positioned below the Antara in the Opel lineup and will be available in front-wheel and four-wheel drive versions. The Mokka name derives from the small, round coffee beans of the Coffea Arabica variety.
The Mokka is based on the GM Gamma II platform and will be available with three engines: a 115 PS (85 kW; 113 bhp) 1.6-litre petrol, a 140 PS (103 kW; 138 bhp) 1.4-litre turbo petrol and a 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.7 diesel.[4][8] The four-wheel drive option is a "smart" 4x4 system that maintains 100% drive at the front wheels until the system detects slip, fast starts or tight cornering, in which case it can send up to 50% of torque to the rear wheels.
The 1.6 is available only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The rest have 6-speed manual gearboxes as standard, but the 1.7 CDTI (2WD) is available with a 6-speed automatic as an option.
