Leading the electric motorcycle market by launching Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle.
The new Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorbike was called "the most radical departure in the 111-year history of the brand" by a Fox Sports commentator. Other industry observers see the development of the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorbike, and the potential development of an electric product or product line, as part of a shift towards "people who might not ordinarily be drawn to Harley's traditional loud, heavy, expensive motorcycles" and "the product of a painful corporate revolution long in the making" as Harley brings out new technology and reaches out for a wider customer base.
Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorbike styling was compared to that of former Harley sport bike subsidiary, Buell Motorcycles.
The Hollywood Reporter said that an electric Harley-Davidson could become a status symbol like the Tesla Model S, and noted that the new Harley had been placed in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Road & Track posted spy shots from the set, and reported that Harley would gauge the reception by the film's audience as a sort of global market test of the product concept.
Unusually for an electric motorcycle (and perhaps uniquely), the Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motor is mounted longitudinally, under the frame. A bevel gear changes the direction of rotation 90° to drive a gilmer belt that turns the rear wheel. The same bevel gear gives the Harley-Davidson LiveWire drivetrain a unique whirring sound, compared to the sound of a jet turbine, or as a writer for The Verge said, "like an oversized vacuum".
According to Wired magazine, Mission Motors provided technical assistance on the motor controller for the new Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric.
Harley-Davidson LiveWire Technical specifications include:
Cast aluminum frame and swingarm
LED headlight
TFT dashboard
Longitudinal three-phase Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric AC motor/bevel gear/belt drive
74 horsepower and 52 pound-feet
Harley-Davidson LiveWire top speed electronically limited to 95 mph
Single disc, 2-piston front brake
Harley-Davidson LiveWire weight 460 lbs
7 kWh Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric battery (estimated)
17-inch front & rear wheels [14]
trellis frame
direct drive Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric powertrain
Harley-Davidson LiveWire Performance
Harley-Davidson LiveWire Range tbc
Harley-Davidson LiveWire 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds (claimed)
Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire will be followed by additional Harley-Davidson electric models through 2022 to broaden the portfolio with lighter, smaller and even more accessible Harley-Davidson electric product options to inspire new riders with new ways to ride.
Extending the company’s leadership in heavyweight motorcycles by continuing to develop improved, more technologically-advanced Touring and Cruiser motorcycles that will keep existing Harley-Davidson riders engaged and riding longer.
Introducing a new modular Harley Davidson 500cc to Harley Davidson 1250cc middleweight platform of motorcycles that spans three distinct product spaces and four displacements, starting with the company’s first Adventure Touring motorcycle, the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250, a 1250cc Custom Harley Davidson model and a 975cc Harley Davidson Streetfighter model, all of which are planned to launch beginning in 2020. Additional Harley Davidson models to broaden coverage in these product spaces will follow through 2022.
Developing a more accessible, small-displacement Harley Davidson (250cc to 500cc) motorcycle for Asia emerging markets through a planned strategic alliance with a manufacturer in Asia. This new Harley Davidson product and broader distribution is intended to fuel Harley-Davidson’s customer access and growth in India, one of the largest, fastest growing markets in the world, and other Asia markets.
