DRAG RACE: New Ford GT vs 2005 Heffner GT700
It's drag race time, and a first chance to put the new and old Ford GTs against one another! With my new GT visiting Florida, we're joined by Brooks from Drag Times and his Heffner GT700 at Palm Beach International Raceway to put them to the test!
With PBIR offering the perfect conditions on their drag strip for the races, we can also make use of their full track. My new Ford GT is a Euro spec car that we recently ran on the dyno at Fabspeed and measured 590whp (claimed is 647bhp) and against that Brooks' car has a Heffner tune and exhaust which took it to 650whp. Of course a fundamental difference between the two comes with the gearbox; the new car featuring a dual clutch with launch control vs the old school manual of the older one.
After an outing to explain what's happening, we can line then up for my first formal drag racing experience on the sticky tarmac. Surprisingly there's much more to it than meets the eye with the staging process and how quickly everything actually happens and then the results of this showdown also tell a very interesting story.
After 4 standing starts and 1 roll race, the cars are exceptionally evenly matched! Of course my skills aren't initially up to the task without the familiarity of exactly what to do but that quickly comes.
Thanks to Brooks for setting up and showing me the ropes: http://youtube.com/dragtimescom

And of course to PBIR for the use of their amazing facilities:
