The Gran Coupe is the fruition of the BMW CS Concept, a vehicle that was intended to slot at the top of BMW's lineup alongside the 7-Series flagship sedan. The CS Concept never made it to production due to the worsening economy in 2008, which also saw the retirement of BMW M development executive Gerhard Richter.[13] Pricing for the BMW 640i Gran Coupe is slightly more than the BMW 740i.[14] The Gran Coupe competes with the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class in the four-door executive coupé market.[15] However, the Gran Coupe is larger and more expensive than the CLS and A7 and is priced close to the Porsche Panamera.[16]

Before the Gran Coupe, the closest rivals to the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS in BMW's current lineup were the BMW X6 (2009--present) and the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07) (2010--present), both of which combine four doors with coupe-like features such as frame-less doors and a sloping rear roof.[17] The 5 Series GT, positioned more for utility with its bi-modal trunk/hatchback, was criticized for its aesthetics in comparison to its sleeker rivals and did not sell as well as BMW executives had expected.[18][17][19]

The Gran Coupe shares the front and rear fascias with the other 6 Series body styles. Compared to the two door 6 Series coupé, the Gran Coupe's wheelbase is longer by stretched 4.5 inches while the body is 4.4 inches longer. This makes the Gran Coupe longer (by 4.0 inches) and wider (by 1.3 inches) than the BMW 5 Series sedan (F10).[11] The extra length, compared to the two-door 6 Series, gives the Gran Coupe a 4+1 seating arrangement, as the rear has two fullsize outboard seats and a middle seat for occasional passengers. The Gran Coupe has a different center console though its dashboard is shared with the Coupé and Cabriolet.
The new model is based on the BMW F12/F13 and shares its 7-speed M-DCT gearbox, BMW N63#S63 TwinTurbo V8 engine and other technology with the BMW M5 (F10). The M6 coupé has a carbon-fiber roof and other weight saving measures, making it 20 kg (44 lb) lighter than the M5, however it is 140 kg (309 lb) heavier than the previous M6. The M6 convertible is 50 kg (110 lb) heavier than the previous M6 Convertible.

The official performance figures claim acceleration from 0--100 km/h (0--62 mph) in 4.2 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) without the M Driver's Package (allows it to run up to 315 km/h). The design style is similar to all recent M cars. The front of the car has a newly designed M kidney grille with an "M6" badge -- a homage to the first generation M6.

6 Series Gran Coupe was unveiled in 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Early models include 640i, 640d, 650i, 650 xDrive.[20][21][22]

Chinese models were unveiled in Auto China 2012. Early Chinese models include 640i, 650i, 650i xDrive.
The BMW 6 Series is a range of executive coupés produced by the German automaker BMW.

The first was the E24, being derived from the E12 & E28 5 Series 4-door sedans. The E24 launched in 1976 to replace the 3.0CS & 3.0CSi (E9). 14 years later, in 2003, BMW released the all new E63/E64 which was available as a coupé and convertible, based on the chassis of the E60 5 Series sedan. Models were the 645Ci (later replaced with the 650i) and the 630i, while the highest performance model is the BMW M6. The third generation F12 and F13 6 series was released in 2011 for the 2012 model year, sharing a platform and some engines with the 7 Series (F01) and 5 Series (F10), and introducing a four-door coupé (fastback sedan) style.

The BMW 8 series is sometimes regarded as the spiritual successor to the E24 6 Series, being also available as a "CSi", however it had a substantially higher price point and performance than the preceding 6 Series.
