BMW will produce the F80 M3 for the 2014 model year, introducing it as only a sedan, as the coupe/convertible is to be spun off into a separate nameplate as the BMW M4, following the company's plans to split off the BMW 4 Series coupe/convertible from the BMW 3 Series.
This fifth generation M3 platform structure will be made of steel, with the bonnet and doors from aluminum. According to the other news, M3 production is closed and there will be no other M3 Coupe. The next M3 Coupe is called M4. M3 Convertible is still going production until September 2013.
The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M. M4 is a replacement for M3 Coupe and M3 Convertible models. Upgrades over the "standard" 4-Series automobiles include more powerful and responsive engines, improved handling/suspension/braking systems, aerodynamic body enhancements, and interior/exterior accents with the tri-colour "M" (Motorsport) emblem.
BMW released technical specifications of new BMW M4 which will be powered by M tuned S55B30 engine, a derived form of the N55 engine, displacing 3 litre and redlining beyond 7500 rpm. The engine will use two mono-scroll turbochargers with boost peaking at 18.1 PSI. Power is rated at 430 hp while torque will be over 500 Nm, weight of new M4 will be no more than 1500 kg. Both 6-speed manual and 7-speed M-DCT transmissions will be available.
Carbon fibre reinforced plastic will be used extensively throughout the car, including drive shaft, roof, roof bow, trunk, and front strut brace. For the first time in a M performance vehicle, an electric power steering unit will be used. The steering system will be specifically tuned for the M3 and M4. 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options will be available with lightweight forged alloys being standard. The M compound brakes will be standard (in blue), while carbon ceramic brakes (in gold) will be available as an option.
The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3-Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M. M3 models have been derived from the E30, E36, E46 and E90/E92/E93 3-series, and sold with coupé, saloon and convertible body styles. Upgrades over the "standard" 3-Series automobiles include more powerful and responsive engines, improved handling/suspension/braking systems, aerodynamic body enhancements, and interior/exterior accents with the tri-colour "M" (Motorsport) emblem. Over the years the M3 and M5 have become the benchmark vehicle against which most sport sedans in its class are compared despite competition from Mercedes-AMG and Audi Quattro GmbH (Audi RS). The last M3 coupe rolled off the assembly line in Germany on 5 July 2013. The M3 name will remain with the sedan, but the coupe model will be replaced by the M4 beginning with the 2014 model year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M3
The launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe sees BMW M GmbH revealing a new interpretation of the high-performance sports car -- and carrying the BMW M philosophy over into the fifth generation of the M3. More than 40,000 examples of the fourth-generation BMW M3 Coupe were built, and now the BMW M4 Coupe is poised to continue this success story. The "M4" badge is a reference to the model series that provides the basis for the new M model -- and, for the first time, the Coupe will be introduced at the same time as the four-door variant. Logic dictates the latter will be christened the BMW M3 Sedan.
"Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept," explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. "The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this philosophy. The engine is the heart of every M model, and the new turbocharged six- cylinder unit fitted in the two new cars combines the virtues of a high-revving naturally aspirated unit with the strengths of turbocharger technology. A committed lightweight design concept produces a weight saving of around
80 kilograms over the outgoing M3. The BMW M3 and BMW M4 take motor sport technology from the track to the road, and thousands of laps of the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife." BMW M3 Price $60,000 Sedan. BMW M3 top speed 155 mph.
Both the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.1 seconds
