On the face of it, the BMW 1M Coupe shouldn't have been a significant car. It was based on the dowdy 1 Series, it didn't have a 'proper' M engine and it was pretty chubby as well. Yet the thuggish 1M transcended all initial scepticism and earned cult status before it had even gone off sale.
