The Audi A7 Sportback (internally designated Typ 4G) is an executive car produced by Audi. It is a five-door fastback which is frequently described as a "four door coupé" with its sleek profile and frameless doors. The A7 is based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, which is shared with the fourth-generation (C7) 2012 Audi A6; with the coupé-like A7 being released before the conventional A6 saloon/wagon.
Four V6 engine options are available at launch: 2.8 L (201 bhp/150 kW; 204 PS) and supercharged 3.0 L (295 bhp/220 kW; 299 PS) petrol engines and two 3.0 L diesel engines with either 201 bhp (150 kW; 204 PS) or 241 bhp (180 kW; 244 PS).[5]
The North American 2012 Audi A7 is only available with the 3.0 L supercharged TFSI V6 developing 310 bhp (231 kW; 314 PS) and 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission.[6] The V8 performance trim will be marketed as the Audi S7.
Reviewers have cited the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class as a competitor to the Audi A7 in the four-door executive coupé market.[7] The A7 has also been compared to the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo since both are mid-luxury hatchbacks, though the 5 Series GT is based on the full-size BMW 7 Series while the A7 is unrelated to the flagship Audi A8.[8]
The A7 features all the driver assistance systems from the 2011 Audi A8, but adds a head-up display and Active Lane Assist.
At the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, Audi presented the Audi S7. This high performance version of the A7 features a 4.0 biturbo TFSI V8 engine making 420 PS (309 kW; 414 bhp) and is offered only with the quattro four wheel drive system. Because of the 7 speed S Tronic gearbox, the maximum torque has been limited to 550 N·m (410 ft·lbf). The Audi S7 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds, according to Road & Track magazine.
The Audi S6 has the same powertrain as the S7, but in a saloon or wagon body style. The 2012 Audi S8 (D4) has a related 4.0 biturbo TFSI V8 engine but in a higher state of tune with 520 hp (388 kW) and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In the ICOTY Awards, the Audi A7 was named as the International Car of the Year 2012.[11]
AutoWeek magazine named the Audi A7 as the Best of the Best/Car for 2012.[12]
Esquire magazine named the Audi A7 as the 2011 Esquire Car of the Year.
