3% BATTERY LEFT! My Porsche Taycan Turbo S Rapid Charging Experience
Only 3% of battery left was uncomfortably low! However, it was by design because it's time for a test of how fast the rapid chargers will actually charge up the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. If I'm going to take this on a road trip, I need to know how it works, so let's find out!
All Taycans come with the Porsche Taycan Charge Card including, effectively a 3 year subscription worth a few hundred pounds that discounts your charging rate at the Ionity stations from £0.69 per kW to £0.30 per kW instead. Ionity is a collaboration between a number of OEMs including Porsche, Audi, VW, Mercedes, BMW, Ford and Hyundai and is going through rapid growth across Europe but lingering behind in the UK with fewer than 10 locations currently in operation - not exactly ideal for daily usage.
However, with plans ahead to venture across Europe with the Taycan when circumstances allow, I need to get an understanding of whether this is going to be realistically feasible. For example to go to the Nurburgring will require a 400 mile drive which needs at least one full charge and a following top-up to make it there. The network locations along the way certainly make this possible but I'm curious to find out how long it realistically will take to do so and the results are pleasantly surprising.
I'm learning fast how to use the EV charging network, and there's certainly a process to discover which locations to avoid and which are super reliable but as I start to get there it's more and more usable as a result. I'm firm of my belief that ultimately to live with an EV you need the ability to charge from home, and that's my intention with the arrival of the Shmuseum before long.
With the battery depleting down to 3% or 6 miles of range upon arrival at the 350kW Ionity charger, in theory the Taycan can run at up to 270kW but we're seeing figures from 100-110kW on the machine. Either way, the 5% to 80% charge time takes approximately 37 minutes, which would be easily achieved during the time you'd stop at a services for a break anyway. I can definitely see this working for me, and look forward to giving it a go in full.
